News and Fishing Reports
APRIL NEWSLETTER:
Renovations: These have all been completed and we are sure members and visitors are enjoying the new layout. It has been noticeable at tournaments that the upstairs group can now enjoy the proceedings at briefings and prizegivings. Maintenance is always an ongoing issue and the committee keeps a focus on this around the club. Next project being looked at is the refurbishment of the toilet area. Now getting a bit jaded after 14 years. Something for the new committee to look at after July elections.
Tournaments: These have pretty much wrapped up as we head into winter. Last to be run for the season was the trout tournament on the 28th and 29th of April. This was well attended as usual with around 100 anglers chasing the elusive monster on Lake Rotoiti. Overall heaviest fish was a beauty weighing in at 4.15kg caught by Gordon Brake. The next heaviest trout for the men was caught by Neil Gwillim and weighed 3.24kg. Winner of the ladies section with a trout of 3.98kg was Pam Dravitski. Winning Junior angler with a trout of 2.50kg was Shaun Gwillim and best fish caught jigging was a nice fish of 3.14kg landed by Brett Martin.
The competition for the heaviest marlin for the ESP heat pump continues until the 30th June. It has been some time since a marlin has been landed and weighed across our scales. They have been sighted out there but angler pressure has been light.
The Marlin / Shark competition was not a success with the finish date passed by and no fish weighed in for either category.
Month Long Weekends Only Tournaments: These tournaments begin with Gurnard being the target species for June followed by Kahawai for July and Tarakihi for August. They are open to all FULL club members, they have no entry fee and are weekends only for each month. Dennis Davey and the team at Davey Painters are now the sponsor for each month and there has been a revamp of the prize structure with 3 sections being introduced. Mens, Ladies and Juniors sections. Up for grabs are 4 Penn rod and reel combo’s for each section. Weigh in will be between 2pm and 4pm Saturday’s and Sunday’s. (Dont be put off with the weigh station missing as the re-piling on the wharf takes place. Fish will be weighed on the hardstand area adjacent to the boat ramp). Good luck, great prizes to be won.
BOI Junior Tournament: Great to see four of our juniors off to the Bay of Islands for the International Yellowtail Tournament which is being held this year from the 10th - 15th June. A test of their skills fishing 6kg and 8kg line class for the “Freight Train” Kingfish of the “Bays”. The team members selected after our Junior Tournament were Chelsea Brown, Sarah Beaufill, Mikaela Pinkerton and Kristian Taipeti. Good luck, have fun and thanks to their chaperone Tracy Beaufill who will be accompanying the team.
Ladies Tournament 2013: The club is pleased to announce a new sponsor for this tournament. Mike Stables owner of Ocean Sports Marine has put his name to the tournament. Welcome Mike and the Team at Ocean Sports Marine. And a big Thank you to Dennis Davey for stepping in at the last minute for the 2012 tournament, most appreciated.
AGM 2012: The clubs AGM for 2012 will be held at 7pm on Thursday the 26th July. A new concept with an evening meeting to see if it suits more people. So often held on a fine sunny morning when many prefer to be fishing. Time will tell on this one. Anyone interested in standing for committee get your nominations in. This year all points of general business must be lodged in writing with the manager 7 days prior to the meeting. This allows the committee time to address these issues and bring the answers to the meeting.
